Break The Cycle
What is it about your lifestyle that concerns or creates inner conflict in you? Have you noticed changes in your relationships, work, and emotional state of mind or health? Have you recently been approached by a loved one, friend or work colleague with concerns relating to your drug or alcohol use? Or has a recent negative event, led you to ask the bigger question, “Do I have a problem controlling my drinking or drug use?” Recognition and seeking support is the first step in breaking the addictive cycle to alcohol and drugs.

Biology of change
While stress is often identified as the reason people start using alcohol and drugs in the first place, stress can also ‘hi-jack’ the brain, compelling people to return to using substances, even when they have committed to recovery. In a study of this issue in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology, (www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0924977X03001779), researchers suggest that people who have used drugs in order to self medicate stress levels, train the brain to call out for drugs when a stressful event occurs. Referred to as ‘cravings’, the brain subconsciously seeks out drugs as a solution to stressful events.
Acquiring the tools to change cognitive distortions and maladaptive behaviour can open the way to sustaining and maintaining a quality life in recovery. Learning new methods of coping with stress, low self worth, anxiety, depression and trauma offer opportunities to change the neural pathways to form new healthier ways of thinking and behaving, which overtime creates new recovery habits.
Choose the new life you want to live in recovery by breaking free from the chains of addiction.
